To coincide with the opening of the 57th Venice Biennale “Viva Arte Viva”, Hanina Fine Arts is delighted to present an exhibition of 21 previous participants of the biennale, including actual works exhibited such as André Lhote’s cubist “Sur la Terrasse” and Léopold Survage’s metaphysical surrealist “Destins”, both shown in 1954; also Carlo Sergio Signori’s green onyx abstract sculpture “Portrait pour Raymonde” shown in 1956. Other artists include the CoBrA painter Georges Collignon; the pioneering Tachiste Camille Bryen; the geometric abstractionist Jean Deyrolle; the Abstraction Création artist Marcelle Cahn; and the Hungarian revolutionary Robert Bérény who first participated in 1928.

The exhibition also includes a selection of archive material from the biennale during the post-war era, as it sought to redefine itself after the fascist associations of the 1930’s, and embrace the avant-garde, whilst also correcting the oversights of earlier years.

Inspired to share some of the wonderful images encountered in researching the exhibition, we have created an online image archive of the biennale:
